Definition

The <col> tag is a self closing tag used to define criteria for a table column and is used in conjunction with the span attribute for multiple columns.

The <col> tag must be used within the <colgroup> </colgroup> or <table> </table> elements.

When not contained within the <colgroup> </colgroup> element the <col> element must follow any <caption> element and precede any <thead>, <tbody>, <tfoot> or <tr> elements.

The use of the span attribute is mutually exclusive when using the <col> and <colgroup> elements together.
